BAE Systems Australia limited

BAE Systems Australia (BAE) provides advanced defence technology that protects national security, keeping critical information and infrastructure secure.

Half of BAE’s 5,800 skilled workforce is based in South Australia; veterans constitute 10% of BAE’s total workforce.

BAE employees undertake VET qualifications ranging from engineering to electronics, electrotechnology, project management, and training and assessment.

With 115 active apprenticeships, 18 school-based trainees, and plans for 35 additional apprentices, BAE contributes significantly to the consolidation of the manufacturing skills base in South Australia.

The Hunter Class Frigate Program will increase the trades workforce from just under 300 to more than 1,200 trades and related employees; it will employ 1,000 apprentices and graduates over the program’s life, involve 250 young people in early careers programs, and enable 13 mature-age employees to undertake recognition of prior learning for an engineering qualification.

Byrnecut

An internationally renowned underground mining contractor experienced in mine development and production techniques, Byrnecut is at the forefront of practices in occupational health and safety, equipment management and maintenance, and purchasing and contract administration.

Across 16 Australian projects, 21% of Byrnecut’s 3,900 staff are undertaking a traineeship or apprenticeship; 40 of the 16 female apprentices and 93 female trainees are based in South Australia, as are 71 of 209 Indigenous employees. 30% of total staff are based in South Australia, reflecting a commitment to the State’s largest mining projects.

Byrnecut’s Trade Upgrade Program enables employees to upgrade a mechanics qualification to a Certificate III suitable for the mining industry.

Training and development areas range from metalliferous mining to crane operations, supervision, frontline leadership, training and assessment, warehousing, and gaining relevant licences and tickets.

Byrnecut aims to grow and excel through a commitment to training and a reputation for safety and reliability.

Datacom

An experienced provider of large-scale customer interaction and relationship-management services, Datacom assists organisations to better serve their people and customers by harnessing the power of technology to innovate and grow.

Datacom staff access entry-level traineeships in business or information technology; Certificate IV qualifications in leadership and management, human resources management, training and assessment, and information technology; and Diploma qualifications in leadership and management, vocational education, and project management.

Employees directly relate learning content to their roles through Datacom’s Learning Hub, where around 780 hours a month of off-the-job training are delivered during work hours in a collaborative workshop format.

Over a recent 12-month period, staff achievements included achieving 136 traineeships (119 in business, 17 in technology), commencing 87 traineeships, and 55 permanent career promotions.

By encouraging employees to explore roles and career opportunities beyond their expectations, Datacom’s Career Pathways Program significantly enhances staff engagement and retention, thereby improving business outcomes.
