Commissioner Cameron Baker has more than 25 years’ experience across vocational education, workforce development, and public policy. He was appointed Chair of the South Australian Skills Commission and South Australia’s Skills Commissioner in July 2023.
A nationally recognised leader in apprenticeship and workforce reform, Commissioner Baker has led a period of significant innovation through the South Australian Skills Commission, including the establishment of Australia’s first formal degree apprenticeships, the Industry Accelerated Apprenticeship Pilot, the Occupational Recognition Service, and new trade pathways supporting defence, advanced manufacturing, and emerging automotive technologies, alongside securing the 2027 WorldSkills Australia National Championships and Skills Show for Adelaide.
Economic development, workforce participation, learner safety, and industry engagement underpin Commissioner Baker’s work, which sees him collaborate closely with employers, unions, industry associations, training providers, universities, and co-regulators to strengthen skills pathways and address workforce shortages.
Before his appointment in South Australia, Commissioner Baker held senior leadership roles including Acting Victorian Skills Commissioner, Head of Apprenticeships Victoria, Director of Major Projects with the Victorian Department of Education and Training, Deputy CEO of Manufacturing Skills Australia, and General Manager – Skills and Engagement at the Transport and Logistics Industry Skills Council.
An accomplished strategic leader and recognised thought leader in vocational education and workforce reform, Commissioner Baker is known for turning bold ideas into practical, industry-led initiatives that strengthen skills systems, create opportunities for learners, and deliver workforce, economic, and social outcomes recognised both nationally and internationally.
