Bridie Franks

Certificate III in Horticulture

Training Provider: TAFE SA

Employer: Jim's Mowing

Bridie Franks came to TAFE SA looking for a significant change in direction and a hands-on career where she could spend more time outdoors amongst nature. And TAFE delivered.

Through her Certificate III in Horticulture at TAFE SA, Bridie has studied a broad range of topics, from pest and disease identification to operating chainsaws, hydroponic cultivation, and permaculture. Learning at TAFE has been in stark contrast to her previous university studies (Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine) and work in clinical diagnostic laboratories. And she knows which she prefers!

For Bridie, studying horticulture and working as a gardener is very rewarding – literally a breath of fresh air.

Bridie’s mum influenced her love of gardening; her dad inspired her love of wild places and the natural world. Looking to work in an area of horticulture with an element of sustainability, Bridie is excited to see where her career will lead!

Jackson Burchell

Certificate IV Business

Training Provider: Time Education & Training Pty Ltd

Employer: Toyota Material Handling Australia

The proverb ‘a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’ rings true for Jackson Burchell. However, he understands everyone’s ‘step’ is different and not everyone knows how to take that step – some need guidance, support, or mentoring to start.

Jackson began his learning journey as an apprentice diesel mechanic with Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA); when offered leadership and mentoring roles, he achieved a Certificate IV in Leadership and Management, then a Certificate IV in Business. Having now become the TMHA Apprentice Mentor for South Australia has encouraged him to undertake a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

Because of his love for and dedication to the automotive industry and VET, Jackson volunteers with The Smith Family Charity; he talks to school students about the automotive industry and VET career pathways – and he’s developed a resource called ‘Take That Step’ to help students start their learning journey.

Zander Lee

Certificate IV in Live Production and Technical Services

Training Provider: TAFE SA

Employer: Adelaide Festival Theatre

After developing an interest in theatre as a child attending touring musicals with their mother, Zander Lee’s desire was to experience both on- and off-stage theatre roles. After leaving school, Zander studied to be a drama teacher, thriving in the creative roles of director and designer.

Over time, Zander’s interest in the technical aspects of theatre grew and the arts industry beckoned; undertaking a Certificate IV in Live Production and Technical Services at the Adelaide College of the Arts, TAFE SA was a natural progression.

Zander now works as a professional lighting technician at the Adelaide Festival Centre, developing their technician and programmer skills to move into a board operator or set electrics role.

Zander’s long-term goal is to work as a Theatre Technician in schools, incorporating their educational experience and technical skills. Through focussing on creating a safe space for young people, they look forward to providing technical training, mentoring and pathways into industry.
