Birdwood High School

Birdwood High School offers future-focused education while fostering strong relationships, high expectations, and a deep sense of belonging.

Recognised for its innovation in STEM, vocational education and training (VET), and career development, Birdwood initiatives connect learning with life beyond school, including VET programs, university pathways, and immersive industry experiences.

Preparing students for careers in defence, advanced manufacturing, and engineering, Birdwood structures timetables so students continue SACE subjects while undertaking VET. Assessments are practical, project-based, and supported through career learning embedded across subjects. Work placement, site tours and employer presentations are core to the program. Employers contribute through work experience, job shadowing, and mentorship.

Birdwood houses South Australia’s first Defence Industries Flexible Industry Pathway; its co-designed, purpose-built regional Engineering Centre of Excellence provides industry-standard fabrication and engineering equipment.

Birdwood is currently contextualising STEM units that link Year 10 and Stage 1 Maths and Science content to engineering principles and VET competencies.

Mitcham Girls High School

Mitcham Girls High School is a leader in promoting girls' education, particularly in STEM, focusing on electrotechnology. The school encourages students to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated industries by providing an environment where students can explore and excel in STEM.

The electrotechnology program is delivered in a purpose-built environment that replicates the energy and expectations of workplaces. Guided by an experienced female trainer, students engage in hands-on, immersive learning, gaining technical skills, confidence and the professionalism needed to thrive in their chosen fields.

Alignment between the Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start) and the core curriculum allows students to build electrical competencies while also developing workplace literacy, numeracy, teamwork, and safety skills.

Mitcham students engage in real-life problem solving, project-based learning and industry site visits, and are mentored through industry partnerships.

Founded on an inclusive culture and commitment to diversity and innovation, Mitcham’s gender-specific programs empower students to become trailblazers in their chosen fields.

Playford International College

Playford International College offers a comprehensive curriculum that caters for a wide range of interests and abilities. A focus on digital literacy equips students to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Every student is given the opportunity to excel.

Playford’s recent Roads2Civil program, designed exclusively for Aboriginal-identified students, provided tailored support and resources for students working towards a civil construction qualification at Civil Train SA’s purpose-built Burton training facility, where students learnt to operate equipment, prepare sites, and follow industry protocols. The program was effective in supporting a wide range of learners, particularly those at risk of disengagement, by offering pathways that led directly to employment or further training.

Playford programs and initiatives encourage students to develop a sense of social responsibility and contribute positively to society. The college’s inclusive and supportive environment fosters a sense of cultural identity and belonging, and encourages students to embrace diversity and community connection.

Woodville High School

With flexible timetabling, structured workplace learning, and robust wraparound support systems, vocational education and training (VET) is embedded in the culture at Woodville High School and integrated into students’ SACE journey.

Responsive to industry trends and student interest, the school-led VET programs provide many students with their first tangible link to a post-school pathway and are designed to build confidence and competence, especially for those at risk of disengagement. For students with specific learning needs, Woodville provides scaffolded learning tools, practical assessments, and oral or visual evidence-submission options.

Entry-level training is offered in construction pathways, food processing, early childhood education and care, and individual support. In 2026, engineering pathways and cyber security will be added to the profile.

In partnership with local employers, registered training organisations, and community groups, Woodville delivers meaningful, real-world learning experiences, empowering young people to adapt, thrive, and transition confidently into skilled careers or further education.
