The Gala Presentation showcased the outstanding accomplishments of the winners and finalists, recognising the importance of our state’s vocational education and training (VET) sector in building highly skilled workers and supporting people to reach their career goals. The awards held on Wednesday 25 September brought together over 550 guests from the VET and skills sector.
In an inspiring celebration of skills excellence, South Australia’s first female stonemason, an enrolled nurse dedicated to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal people, a lighting technician aspiring to launch a youth theatre company, and a training manager who developed a mobile coffee trailer for portable barista training were few of the diverse pool of winners. These trailblazers are making significant contributions to their fields and driving positive change in the community.
This year, 14 winners were selected from 120 nominations, including seven individuals and seven organisations. Winners of aligned award categories will have the opportunity to represent South Australia at the 2024 Australian Training Awards in Canberra on 6 December.
An inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award was introduced this year, recognising Joanne Denley for her leadership and impactful contributions to VET over her 30-year career. In addition, nearly 2,500 votes were cast for this year’s Voters’ Choice Award, proudly sponsored by Drakes Supermarkets. This year’s winner was Imogen Smith, Finalist of School-based Apprentice or Trainee of the Year award category.
Hon Blair Boyer MP, Minister for Education, Training and Skills:
“The awards highlight the incredible contributions of individuals and organisations that motivate others and build pathways in the VET sector. A high-performing skills sector is vital for supporting major projects such as AUKUS and the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital.”
Commissioner Cameron Baker, Chair of the SA Skills Commission:
“This year’s diversity of winners highlights the sector’s accessibility and its role in empowering individuals with the skills needed to thrive in various industries. Their success underscores the adaptability and innovation of South Australia’s VET sector.”
Presented by the South Australian Skills Commission and supported by Principal Partner Mas National, these awards are the state's premier recognition program for VET, celebrating the diverse achievements of students, apprentices, trainees, trainers, training providers, schools, and employers.
